Warriors need Kristaps Porzingis to make Graham Ike signing a non-factor

The Golden State Warriors made the right call by adding Graham Ike on a two-way contract this week.

He was a real standout in Summer League, operating as a seemingly high-level rebounder and a solid interior scorer on a roster that, relative to the expectations for that sort of competition, was laden with talent. With one more two-way spot to fill next to LJ Cryer and Malevy Leons, Ike was absolutely the right choice.

But he wasn't signed purely because Golden State loves his game. There are major concerns about what this center rotation could look like over the course of an 82-game slate. Kristaps Porzingis hasn't played in more than 65 games since 2016-17, and Al Horford appeared in just 45 games last season as he dealt with various ailments over the course of the campaign.

The Warriors also have Charles Bassey in the fold, and they're hoping that the high energy, rebounding skill-set he showed across his five regular-season appearances with Golden State last season can translate into a larger workload, especially if Porzingis or Horford needs to miss time.

But at the end of the day, it falls upon Porzingis, who will be the Warriors' starting center, to make these depth additions unnecessary. If he's able to stay healthy and perform at a high level, the outlook for this Golden State roster suddenly looks a whole lot brighter.

Kristaps Porzingis' health is the major X-factor for the Warriors in 2026-27

Again, it's not that Ike isn't capable of taking on big man minutes for the Warriors. He comes from a high-level college program at Gonzaga, and he has the strength and the interior scoring game to at least be a viable option for this roster on an intermittent basis. The same goes for Bassey.

But the Warriors' ideal outcome this season is that neither of these pieces needs to play extensive minutes.

Porzingis has real upside to be unlocked on this roster. He'll likely begin the season as the Warriors' second offensive option next to Stephen Curry. If he's able to hit his perimeter shots on a consistent basis and provide more of an interior complexion to Golden State's offense as a whole, there's a world where he's in consideration for an All-Star nod by the time mid-season rolls around.

Horford is highly important as well. He's still capable of taking on starting minutes when Porzingis is out, and although his offensive production dropped last season, he still possess some major floor-spacing upside. Even when he's on the bench, he'll be an integral piece of Golden State's rotation.

But the reality is that, at age 40, there's a baseline of games that Horford is going to need to miss. Those will be the matchups where Bassey and/or Ike are trusted with backup big man duties, and Golden State will be forced to sacrifice some of the offensive potential they'll usually be able to squeeze out of the center position. That's a viable option, at least in limited stints over the course of the season.

But it will be up to Porzingis to insulate those players from needing to take on major rotational minutes. Even if Horford is healthy, his workload is likely going to hover around the 20-25 minute per-game average he saw last season. Porzingis can take on more than that when he's fully available, and he can provide the Warriors with the offensive punch they need on a night-to-night basis.

The high-end outcome for Porzingis in terms of availability, therefore, is already much higher than Horford's. The more often Porzingis is available to play, the more often they'll be able to leave Bassey and Ike in complementary rotational roles.

That's the burden that falls upon Porzingis in 2026-27. Ike is a valuable depth signing, but for him to stay in his rightful place in the rotation, Porzingis is going to need to have a healthy season.
