The Cleveland Cavaliers have paid veteran guard James Harden a hefty new contract extension, proving a likely mistake that the Golden State Warriors must avoid with Jimmy Butler next year.
After patiently waiting for the Cavaliers to complete other business, including the acquisition of Denver Nuggets forward Peyton Watson in a sign-and-trade on Wednesday, Harden has now signed a three-year, $97 million contract as first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania on Thursday.

Harden is worth $30-35 million based on his still very high recent production, but the problem here is the length of contract that will see the former MVP paid handsomely in the 2028-29 season where he'll be nearly 40-years-old.
There's also a player option on the third year and a trade kicker, meaning Cleveland can't easily wriggle out of the contract if things go awry. What else were they going to do though? There was clearly a promise in place from the moment the Cavaliers acquired Harden in a notable trade that sent Darius Garland to the L.A. Clippers at the February mid-season deadline.
This Harden deal, on top of a maximum extension for Donovan Mitchell this summer, Evan Mobley's max deal, Watson's new four-year, $88 million contract, and Jarrett Allen's three-year, $90.7 million extension, could cripple the Cavaliers in the NBA's tax aprons era. They're now stuck with this team -- one that should be very strong but is far from the favorite to make it out of the Eastern Conference.

It's a reminder to the Warriors not to give out a similar contract to Butler next offseason, even if the 36-year-old returns successfully from injury and assuming he actually makes it to the summer with the franchise rather than being traded as a $56.8 million expiring contract.
Just as Cleveland were with this Harden deal, Golden State were tied into giving Butler a two-year max extension upon his arrival in February last year. However, it should be the front office calling the shots next time around. Depending on how he looks after the torn ACL, Butler may have reached the point where he needs to play on one-year deals, or potentially a two-year contract if the annual salary is heavily reduced.
Warriors can't use cap space to overpay Jimmy Butler
The silver lining to an underwhelming Golden State offseason is that they've set themselves up for significant cap space next summer, allowing the front office to completely revamp their roster depending on how this season goes.
While there's certainly a world in which Butler remains on the team beyond this upcoming season, the Warriors can't be using their cap space to overpay their six-time All-Star for sentimental reasons and because of his relationship with Mike Dunleavy Jr. and others within the organization.
Golden State will have to tread a fine balance with Butler and Draymond Green when it comes to negotiations on their next deals, but they shouldn't be locking themselves up long-term for players so deep into their career like Cleveland have just done with Harden.
